One people, many shores. How do we heal the divisions between us and move as one?
The scattering placed us on many shores — the continent, the islands, North and South America, Europe. Too often we let borders, accents and colonial histories divide us into 'African,' 'Caribbean,' 'African American' as if we were strangers. But we are one people with one origin and, increasingly, one destiny. Reconnection means learning each other's histories, trading and building together, and healing old resentments. 2 Voices in the Circle
During the Year of Return I hosted African American cousins in Accra. We cried at the Door of No Return together. The 'division' between us is colonial paperwork — the blood remembers no borders.
Honest moment: I grew up hearing island vs 'Yankee' vs African jokes. It was all imported poison. Now I trade with a Nigerian brother and a Black American sister and we're building. One people, many shores, like the man said.
